Presov

Overview

Introduction

Founded in the 12th century, Presov, Slovakia, is a center for the Ruthenian minority, an ethnic group that speaks a dialect of Ukrainian and worships in the Uniate Church (a hybrid of Catholicism and Orthodoxy). The town is also home to a university, the Wine Museum and the Museum of Jewish Culture. Its main square is surrounded by a number of historical buildings. If you find yourself in town, which is 140 mi/225 km northeast of Bratislava, stop at the Gothic Roman Catholic Church of Sv. Mikulas (St. Nicholas), in the heart of the city on a pedestrian-only square. The town of Bardejov (20 mi/32 km north of Presov) has some nice hot springs.
