Overview

Introduction

Though efforts are being made to maintain peace, Mogadishu (pop. 1,257,000) remains divided among hostile clans. At one time Somalia's capital and largest city merited a two-day visit. Mogadishu has suffered extensive damage since then—the Italian colonial downtown area has been almost completely destroyed by fighting and the old Bakara Market, which was once a traditional camel market, burned to the ground in 2002. We hope that when the fighting finally stops, some of the city's attractions will remain. Beautiful beaches stretch along the Indian Ocean, but inquire locally about which ones are clean and safe.
