A quiet town (130 mi/210 km northeast of Helsinki), Mikkeli has a nice 14th-century church (with a stone chapel) and a good military museum.
In Visulahti (4 mi/6 km from Mikkeli), visit Miniland (a sampling of Finnish architecture in miniature), the Automobile Exhibition (about 30 old cars) and the spectacular Kirkonvarkaus Suspension Bridge.
The ancient Astuvansalmi lakeside rock paintings are a worthwhile attraction at Ristiina, 15 mi/21 km from Mikkeli. Most visitors go by boat from Mikkeli. Local activities include canoeing, skiing, bicycling and windsurfing. Allow one night there.
