Maupiti

Maupiti

Overview

Introduction

A quiet corner of the Society Islands, Maupiti lies 190 mi/300 km northwest of Papeete and 25 mi/40 km west of Bora Bora. Visitors can reach the island flying from Papeete (50 minutes) or by boat from Bora Bora.

Few people visit Maupiti because there are no first-class hotels (visitors stay in simple guesthouses or with local families), but its lagoon and white-sand beaches are picturesque. A walk around the whole island takes about three hours. Do not miss Tereia beach, and hiking to the top of Mount Teurafaatiu is a must for its panoramic views.

Those who truly want to relax and learn about French Polynesian culture will enjoy it. A three-night stay is recommended, but be aware that there's really nothing in the way of entertainment or commercial tourist attractions.
