York

York

Overview

Introduction

Once the nation's capital courtesy of the British occupation of Philadelphia, York, Pennsylvania, is a blend of colonial, Revolutionary and Victorian heritage. More than half of its downtown buildings appear on the National Register of Historic Preservation. York is located 102 mi/164 km west of Philadelphia.

The city is best seen on a walking tour, which will include such sites as the Golden Plough Tavern (built in the 1740s), the General Horatio Gates House, the Fire Museum of York County, the Bonham House, the Weightlifting Hall of Fame and the Barnett Bobb Log House.

As most motorcycle enthusiasts already know, York is home to one of the Harley Davidson assembly plants. Free 60-minute tours allow visitors to step onto the assembly-line floor to see legendary bikes put together.

In Hanover, 26 mi/41 km southwest of York, visitors can enjoy year-round recreation opportunities on and around Lake Marburg in Codorus State Park.
