Vianden

Vianden

Overview

Introduction

However you approach Vianden, Luxembourg, the sight of the castle will surprise and delight you. Located on the Our River, 30 mi/48 km northeast of Luxembourg City, this town's well-restored medieval castle has a nice display of antique weaponry and armor, furniture and tapestries. Vianden is also known for the Victor Hugo House and Museum, a folklore museum and the scenic wooded hills where Hugo used to go to relax.

Plan to spend a full day in Vianden, and take your walking shoes and lots of energy; the 700-year-old town's hillside location means plenty of challenging walking. If you'd rather not hoof it, ride the Telesiege chairlift.

The staircase to the top of the nearby Societe Electrique de l'Our hydroelectric pumping installation will take your breath away.
