Introduction

A 16th-century fishing village near Spanish Galicia, Viana do Castelo, Portugal, is located 45 mi/70 km north of Porto. It is known for its medieval buildings, the stunning interior of the Igreja de Misericordia, rich folklore and impressive contemporary architecture.

Climb to the top of Monte de Santa Luzia for wonderful views of the city, the river and the Celtic ruins behind the basilica. There are also some large beaches nearby and excellent opportunities to shop for ceramics, filigree jewelry and colorful costumes.
