Quincy

Quincy

Overview

Introduction

Architecture buffs appreciate the Mississippi river town of Quincy, about 110 mi/177 km west of Springfield. Trade-derived wealth funded an encyclopedic collection of historic homes dating from the 1830s, many of them clustered in the pedestrian-friendly East End Historic District.

The John Wood Mansion, an 1835 Greek Revival home owned by the former governor of Illinois, and the Mediterranean castle Villa Kathrine, perched on a river bluff, predate the Civil War and are open for tours. The Quincy Museum, housed in the Newcomb-Stillwell Mansion, covers the development of the region.
