Kuldiga

Kuldiga

Overview

Introduction

Kuldiga, known as "the Pearl of Courland," is a Baltic vacation spot 100 mi/165 km west of Riga with a wonderful old town full of Gothic, Renaissance and baroque architecture. It's a great place to stroll, and film crews love the colorful wooden houses.

Latvians say it is good luck for a man on his honeymoon to carry his bride across Kuldiga's waterfall, the widest waterfall in Europe at 817 ft/249 m.

The nearby town of Sabile is home to the country's largest Roma Gypsy population and, according to Guinness World Records, the world's northernmost functioning vineyards (which yield 150 bottles of wine that are not for sale).
