Kittery

Kittery

Overview

Introduction

A popular destination 80 mi/130 km southwest of Portland, Kittery is known for shipbuilding at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and a variety of outlet stores.

Take a look at the ship models and submarine display at the Kittery Historical and Naval Museum; visit Fort McClary State Historic site, a military post during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and World War I; and stop in at the First Congregational Church, Maine's oldest existing church. The Lady Pepperell House is a Georgian mansion built in 1760.

York Village sits very close to Kittery, and the whole area can be seen in one day. Off the coast, the Isles of Shoals harbored pirates until the construction of a manned lighthouse. The isles later became the setting for a literary enclave that attracted such luminaries as Nathaniel Hawthorne, James Whittier and Harriet Beecher Stowe.
