Harrison, 10 mi/177 km northwest of Little Rock, is a good place to stay while visiting the Ozarks, and it's close to Mystic Caverns and several other caverns.
The Saunders Museum in Berryville has a big collection of guns, including centuries-old models and shooting iron that belonged to several famous good guys and bad guys of the 1800s.
Just 20 mi/32 km south of Harrison is the Buffalo National River, a swiftly moving waterway lined with 500-ft/150-m limestone bluffs and an upland forest of oak and hickory. It's a great area for canoeing, fishing, swimming and tubing. State Road 7 runs between Harrison and the Buffalo National River, and its beauty led Arkansas to name it a State Scenic Byway. The route passes through both the Ozark and Ouachita National Forests and continues south through Hot Springs to Arkadelphia. Don't plan a quick drive, as the scenery is worth a number of stops. Beware of logging trucks.
