This town ,150 mi/240 km southwest of St. John's, was named for the Grand Banks, the famed fishing waters off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. Not surprisingly, Grand Bank is a fishing town and is considered by many to be the epitome of rural Newfoundland.
The seafaring life is celebrated at the impressive Southern Newfoundland Seamen's Museum, which is a testimonial to the many local mariners who have lost their lives to the North Atlantic. It contains artifacts, photographs and models.
The restored George C. Harris House is home to a local-history museum, where inventive exhibitions unveil local myths and legends.
