Ghat

Ghat

Overview

Introduction

Getting to this Tuareg outpost requires a flight or a grueling drive through the desert (we suggest flying one way). The main reason to visit the village is to experience the drive there along an ancient Saharan trade route. Each leg of the journey can take several days, and it's a good idea to check with local authorities before attempting the journey. The town itself offers a glimpse of tribal and desert cultures. Nearby are hot springs and a castle. Farther south, there is impressive prehistoric cave art in Tadrart (Jabal) Akakus. 805 mi/1,340 km southwest of Tripoli.
