Fort Lee

Fort Lee

Overview

Introduction

The George Washington Bridge is what most commonly comes to mind when locals think of Fort Lee, but this small town first found its place in history when General Washington's troops built a fort there during the 1776 British campaign to control Manhattan and the Hudson River. (It was originally named Fort Constitution.) Visit Fort Lee Monument Park to see the preserved battlements and cannon and stop in at the Fort Lee Museum to see historic photographs and artifacts from the town's rich past. A less-known fact is that the film term "cliffhanger" originated from the early serials that were filmed on the New Jersey Palisades in Fort Lee, back in the fledgling, pre-Hollywood days of the motion-picture industry. It is 18 mi/29 km from Newark.
