The tree-shaded rural town of Flemington in northwestern New Jersey dates back to 1756 and has many restored Federal, Greek Revival and Victorian buildings. This tiny town gained notoriety when the famous Lindbergh kidnapping trial was held there in 1935: Every October a re-enactment of the trial is staged in the restored courtroom where it took place. It's also known for Liberty Village Outlet Marketplace, a colonial-style cluster of more than 80 outlet stores.
Also in town is Northlandz, one of the world's largest model railways, which occupies a 16-acre/6-hectare site and includes elaborate bridges, skyscrapers and mountains that are as tall as a three-story building.
Each year Flemington hosts the Hunterdon County 4-H and Agricultural Fair (late August to early September). Nearby, the little towns of Frenchtown (filled with dozens of antiques shops, art galleries and cafes) and Clinton (home of the Red Mill Museum Village) are well worth a stop. Flemington is 40 mi/65 km southwest of Newark.
