Home of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville is in the forested mountains of the state's northwest corner. There's a nice view of the area from nearby Mount Sequoyah. On campus, visit the University Museum, which is devoted to cultural and natural-history exhibits, and the Fine Arts Center, which often has excellent temporary exhibits.
Take a guided walking tour of Fayetteville's Washington-Willow Historic District, a treasure trove of Victorian homes. Headquarters House is another vintage structure and was employed (at different times) as a command center by both the North and the South in the Civil War.
Plays and performances by the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas take place in Fayetteville's Walton Arts Center. Be sure to check the performance and gallery schedules for the Walton Arts Center, which often features traveling musicals and art exhibits.
Don't miss the farmer's market in the town square, held every Tuesday and Saturday morning.
Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park, 15 mi/24 km southwest of town, preserves a Civil War battlefield. There are guided tours, a hiking trail and several period buildings.
Devil's Den State Park is about 25 mi/40 km south of Fayetteville. The park contains interesting caves, crevices and rock formations, and there are various hiking trails to explore. Overnight accommodations (cabins and campsites) are available.
