Fatima, Portugal, located 60 mi/100 km north of Lisbon, is known to the devout as the site of an appearance by the Virgin Mary in 1917. Pilgrims go there seeking a miracle cure for their illnesses, and special ceremonies take place on the 13th of each month. If you're not interested in Fatima's religious significance, you won't find much to see and do there. There is, however, a scenic area nearby, the Aire and Candeeiros Mountains Natural Park, which offers opportunities for hiking and a chance to explore the Mira de Aire and Moeda Caves.
