Fatima

Fatima

Overview

Introduction

Fatima, Portugal, located 60 mi/100 km north of Lisbon, is known to the devout as the site of an appearance by the Virgin Mary in 1917. Pilgrims go there seeking a miracle cure for their illnesses, and special ceremonies take place on the 13th of each month. The biggest celebration is 13 May, the anniversary of the first appearance. http://www.santuario-fatima.pt.

If you're not interested in Fatima's religious significance, you won't find much to see and do there. There is, however, a scenic area nearby, the Aire and Candeeiros Mountains Natural Park, which offers opportunities for hiking and a chance to explore the Mira de Aire and Moeda Caves.
