Erzurum

Overview

Introduction

The city of Erzurum, Turkey, 475 mi/765 km east of Ankara in eastern Turkey, is surrounded by beautiful, gently eroded mountains. You may not want to make a special trip to see Erzurum, but it has several interesting sights for those passing through or spending the night.

Be sure to stop at the Cifte Minareli Medrese, a Koranic school dating from 1253. Other sights include the Ulu Mosque, the Yakutiye Medrese (built by the Mongols in 1308) and the Uc Kumbetler, three Seljuk tombs. There's a citadel in town that was formerly a military installation but now the general public may visit it.
