Enniskillen

Enniskillen

Overview

Introduction

In County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, Enniskillen (55 mi/90 km southwest of Belfast) has several worthwhile sights. Chief among them are Castlecoole, an 18th-century mansion, and the Regimental Museum of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (http://www.inniskilling.com). The museum is housed within Enniskillen Castle National Monument. There are several places to enjoy Irish music in the town—try the Crow's Nest on High Street on a Tuesday night. Or ask a local where you can find a session.

Devenish Island, just north of the city, is home to a well-preserved round tower dating from the 12th century. The Lakeland Visitor Centre provides information for those interested in fishing and cruising the upper and lower loughs (lakes). Try the underground boat trip through Marble Arch Caves. The distinctive lacy porcelain of Belleek can be seen at the pottery center in town, open March-September. And it's just a 24-mi/39-km drive along the shores of Lough Erne to the town of Belleek and its pottery factory shop.
