Sioux Falls

Sioux Falls

Overview

Introduction

If you're entering South Dakota from Nebraska, Iowa or Minnesota, you'll likely pass through Sioux Falls, South Dakota's largest city and the center of commerce for the eastern part of the state. It's named for the Sioux tribe of Native Americans and the Big Sioux River's waterfalls.

Its downtown area has a charming, urban feel with plenty of great dining, shopping, and lodging options. The city draws locals from around the greater, rural region to enjoy its many amenities.

In addition to beautiful Falls Park, the city has a sizeable number of craft breweries that are helping it to gain attention for low-key nightlife or as a weekend getaway. Empire Mall and concerts or events at Denny Sanford Premier Center also draw visitors to the city.

A centerpiece of the downtown revitalization is Washington Pavilion with a performing arts center, interactive science museum, and art galleries. Phillips Avenue continues to gain momentum as a destination for bars, dining and local shops in the heart of town.

Outside of the city center, Sioux Falls is also an agricultural industry hub with a growing economy in the biomedical, finance and manufacturing sectors.
