Savo

Savo

Overview

Introduction

This primitive volcanic island, populated by friendly people, is the home of the megapod bird, which lays huge eggs in the sand. If your timing is right, observe the Sacrifices to the Megapod Bird ceremony, an ancient ritual that includes kite fishing from a canoe. The hot springs on the volcanic slopes are used for cooking. Although the island lies in Iron Bottom Sound, where diving is interesting because of submerged war relics, the only dive operators who go there are located in Honiara, Guadalcanal. Some villages have primitive rest houses, but amenities are nonexistent: There's no electricity, and water from wells must be boiled. Plan on providing your own food, too. If this sounds too spare, consider Savo as a day trip from Honiara. 25 mi/40 km north of Honiara.
