Dover

Dover

Overview

Introduction

First established in 1683 and the state's capital since 1777, Dover, 45 mi/72 km south of Wilmington, grew up around The Green—the parklike center of town designed by William Penn.

The Green makes a good place to start touring the city. It's surrounded by many beautiful houses and excellent historical displays, including the Delaware State House, built in 1792.

West of the city in the Rose Valley area there is a small but very active Amish farming community.

Old Dover Days, a historical celebration, is held in the city in early May.
