Deerfield

Deerfield

Overview

Introduction

You won't find many architectural preservation projects better executed than Historic Deerfield—12 buildings from the 1700s and 1800s that have been meticulously preserved within the larger town of Deerfield, Massachusetts. Located 80 mi/130 km west of Boston, some of the homes are furnished just as they were when built; others have been converted into museums documenting local history.

You'll find the preserved homes on Main Street, Deerfield's main avenue. Start your visit at Hall Tavern, where you can purchase tickets for the guided tour—it's the only way you can see the interiors of the buildings.

The Children's Museum at Indian House is a real treat. Children can try on 18th-century costumes, play with colonial toys and read from a hornbook. If there's time, stop for a hearty repast at the Deerfield Inn.
