Conakry

Conakry

Overview

Introduction

Spreading along a narrow peninsula, Guinea's capital city is noisy, chaotic and polluted—a dramatic contrast from the country's peaceful, picturesque interior, where most visitors choose to spend their time. Among the downtown sights are the Palais de Nations, Musee National (regional displays from all of Guinea), the Place de la Republique, the Niger markets and St. Mary's Cathedral (an early-20th-century structure). In the Camayenne district, the nation's largest mosque stands near Conakry's arboretum, featuring towering tropical trees and a private plant nursery. Conakry has a number of nightclubs offering live music and dancing, particularly in the outlying Touyah district.

To escape the urban frenzy, take day excursions to the Iles de Los, a short boat ride from the capital's port, or drive to the nearby town of Dubreeka to visit Mount Kakoulima and Soumba Falls.
