Ciudad Del Este

Ciudad Del Este

Overview

Introduction

Set on the banks of the Parana River, this city is the primary border crossing to Iguacu Falls and the jumping-off point for excursions to nearby Itaipu Dam. The Puente de Amistad (Friendship Bridge), which spans the Parana River, links Paraguay to Brazil. If you cross it on foot, you'll get a striking view of the city. Ciudad del Este has attracted immigrants from Brazil, Korea and Japan, whose influence is apparent in the varied cuisine available. Food and accommodations are inexpensive, and shopping is abundant, courtesy of importers and smugglers (everything from liquor and electronic goods to Mercedes-Benz autos of doubtful provenance is available at low prices). 200 mi/320 km east of Asuncion.
