Chaves

Overview

Introduction

The name Chaves, from the Portuguese word for keys, dates from the time when citizens literally locked up the place at night.

Today, Chaves, Portugal, located 112 mi/180 km northeast of Porto, is an important spa town with many ancient buildings and timeworn streets. Walk these streets to see the town's castle, churches and 2,000-year-old Roman bridge.
