Cayo Largo lies south of the main island of Cuba, some 120 mi/195 km southeast of Havana, and has some of the best stretches of sand and water in the Caribbean. It offers a half-dozen all-inclusive resorts, plus a dedicated fishing lodge. (Alas, millions of mosquitoes can be a problem at times, so strong repellent is essential, especially at dusk.) Snorkeling, diving, windsurfing and fishing for bonefish and tarpon are all available. Boat excursions to Playa Sirena, the most beautiful beach, take place in the glaring midday hours and, unfortunately, depart before the early-evening magic sets in.
This is the only place in Cuba where nudism is tolerated, but few, if any, Cubans visit the island, and entertainment is relegated to the canned programs at the resorts.
The Sol Club, run by the Melia chain, is the best resort on the island, the Hotel Pelicano is of acceptable standards, and the Isla del Sur Resort is a favorite with Germans. Package tours are offered from Havana and Trinidad, but be warned that upon arrival many guests are shunted to cheaper hotels than they have paid for.
