Bouillon

Bouillon

Overview

Introduction

In the Ardennes Forest, near the border with France, is the Duke of Bouillon Castle, one of the most beautiful medieval fortresses in the country. The castle can be visited during the day, but for a touch of excitement, go at night when it's lit by torches (July and August). We like to watch the torchlight procession while enjoying a drink at one of the outdoor cafes on the opposite bank of the Semois River.

Good day trips from Bouillon include the ancient Roman crossroads of Arlon, an important Roman outpost (archaeological museum, Roman tower), and Bastogne, the site of the Battle of the Bulge (see the large, star-shaped war memorial). Bouillon is 103 mi/166 km southeast of Brussels.
