Bahia Blanca, Argentina, was founded in 1828 and originally named Fortaleza Protectora Argentina. There are not a lot of attractions, though there are some cultural and wildlife activities. Of note is the Museo del Puerto (the Port Museum), while a nature reserve encompassing several islands is also of interest. Most people visit this city 355 mi/570 km southwest of Buenos Aires not as a destination in itself, but rather as a convenient stopping point on the overland route between Buenos Aires and Bariloche, 500 mi/800 km to the southwest.
Northwest of Bahia Blanca is the Sierra de la Ventana, a resort village that offers golf, hiking, climbing, kayaking and horseback riding. Pigue, a nearby town, holds the quirky, annual giant omelette festival.
