Arvidsjaur, a town in Lapland about 450 mi/725 km north of Stockholm, is a lively tourist center in the summer and practically empty in the winter. It is so cold then that automobile companies go there to test their cars in harsh, subfreezing temperatures. You'll see plenty of reindeer in the area.
The open-air museum, Lappstaden, is the largest Sami church town in the country, with more than 80 buildings dating from the end of the 18th century. It gives visitors a sense of everyday life in the far north. If you visit on the last weekend of August, you will see it being used during a Sami religious holiday.
