Abbeville County was the birthplace of John C. Calhoun, the influential politician who defended the rights of southern states before the Civil War. As Calhoun's home and as the place where the first secession document was presented, the town has been called "the birthplace of the Confederacy."
Visit the Town Square, the Historic District and the Opera House, where such vaudeville headliners as Groucho Marx, Jimmy Durante and Fanny Brice once performed.
Near Abbeville are Due West, a town on the National Register of Historic Places, and Greenwood, named for its beautiful rolling hills. The South Carolina Festival of Flowers takes place in Greenwood on the third weekend in June. Abbeville is 90 mi/140 km west of Columbia.
