City of Rocks National Reserve

City of Rocks National Reserve

Overview

Introduction

City of Rocks National Reserve, Idaho, is full of remarkable rock formations that rise like skyscrapers—some 60 stories high—above the desert floor near the Idaho-Utah border (about 4 mi/6 km southwest of Almo and 200 mi/320 km southeast of Boise). The sight amazes travelers today no less than it did immigrants on the California Trail in the mid-1800s.

Some of the formations bear descriptive names, such as Devil's Bedstead, Register Rock (it's marked with the graffiti of passing pioneers), Twin Sisters and Treasure Rock, where a huge cache of stolen gold is said to be buried.
