Chizaria National Park

Overview

Introduction

This national park in western Zimbabwe is one of the country's most remote and least developed reserves, and the only way to get to this region is by sturdy four-wheel-drive vehicle. Nevertheless, it is the country's third-largest park and sits astride the dramatic Zambezi Escarpment, which is filled with steep cliffs and river gorges with endless views of Lake Kariba. Chizarira takes its name from the word sijalila, meaning "great barrier" in the local Tonga language. The wildlife, particularly in the Busi Valley, is abundant. Most of the plains game is present, including kudu, impala, tsessebe, sable and roan, along with bigger species such as elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo. Chizarira is also home to the rare Taita falcon which nests on the cliffs. There is one private camp on the edge of the park and very basic campsites within the park, for which you'll need to take along your own supplies. Chizarira National Park is 348 mi/562 km west of Harare.
