Montelimar

Montelimar

Overview

Introduction

Montelimar, Nicaragua, was once the beach getaway of dictator Anastasio Somoza. After he fled the country in 1979 (following a shootout at the estate), the Sandinistas turned it into a luxury resort complete with villas, restaurants, bars, discos and a casino.

Situated 60 mi/100 km southwest of Managua, Montelimar was taken over and completely revamped by the Barcelo resort company after the Sandistas left power. It is now Nicaragua's sole all-inclusive resort (all food, lodging and even alcohol are included in the price), located on one of the country's nicest beaches. You can also rent bicycles or scooters at the resort, or arrange for guided tours to other parts of the country. http://www.barcelomontelimarbeach.com.
