Kunya Urgench

Kunya Urgench

Overview

Introduction

This capital of the ancient state of Khorezm is well worth a day trip, but getting there can be a bit difficult. The nearest town is Dashoguz, about 60 mi/100 km to the southeast. Trips can also sometimes be arranged from towns in western Uzbekistan (Khiva, Urgench or Nukus), but visa formalities and border crossings can make the trip a complicated affair. The highlights of Kunya Urgench are beautifully decorated mausoleums, including tombs for Turabeg Khanum, Najmaddin Kubra and Sultan Ali. The Kutlug Timur minaret is said to be the tallest minaret in Central Asia. Approximately 300 mi/500 km north of Ashgabat.
