The Top Three River Cruises For Millennials

Cruising is often seen as an activity for retirees – especially when it comes to cruising the rivers of Europe. Throughout the past few years, as river cruising has gained popularity, river cruise companies have taken steps to cater to younger travelers. From active experiences and hands-on cultural immersion, there is something for young people to do both on and off a river cruise vessel.

On almost every AmaWaterways cruise I've taken there have been young people on board. I took my first AmaWaterways cruise when I was 14 years old. Since then, I have always looked at AmaWaterways as a suitable option for millennials.

AmaWaterways has been a pioneer in active cruising, which is likely the reason that it started to attract a younger crowd in the first place. The company offers active excursions in almost every port and has dedicated wellness hosts that leads group activities like pilates, circuit training, and even champagne yoga.

Lastly, the company has triple and adjoining cabins. This makes it a good choice for friends wanting to travel in groups of three, as well as for couples traveling with young children that they want to keep a close eye on.

Prices for AmaWaterways’ 7-night Enchanting Rhine itinerary start at US$3,099 per person.

Avalon Waterways' Active & Discovery itineraries are another great option for millennial travelers. The company offers four Active & Discovery itineraries on the Rhine, Danube, and Rhone. These itineraries will speak to young cruisers because of the amount of active excursions that are offered throughout the voyage. At every port guests will have the option to get moving, be it through a walk, bike, hike, jog, kayaking trip, or something else.

Discovery excursions are also a fun option for millennial travelers. In Ghent, a discovery excursion will take to you Graffiti Street. Other discovery excursions include chocolate making workshops, pottery and painting classes, wine tastings, and more.

Prices for Avalon's 9-day Active & Discovery on the Danube itinerary with one night in Budapest start at US$3,008 per person.

U by Uniworld is unique on this list in that it was actually designed specifically for millennials. When the line first launched it had an age limit for guests, ensuring a millennial only travel experience. The age limit has since been lifted, but the line is still popular among younger guests.

From sleek matte-black exteriors, to bold pops of color and neon lights, there is no question that this ship was designed to be Instagrammable. However, the ship's appearance isn't the only thing that will cater to young travelers; Uniworld has also curated itineraries and excursions that sway toward a younger demographic. On U by Uniworld sailings guests will have the option to participate in hiking, biking, jogging, and even yoga excursions.

The fittings of the ship and itineraries are excursions offered are enough for U to make our list, but perhaps the largest selling point of these active journeys is the price. When looking at voyages suitable for millennial travelers it is important to look for budget friendly options. Sure there are plenty of young professionals that can afford a luxury vacation, but there is also a group of millennials who are eager to get out and explore on limited funds.

U's itineraries start at US$1,749 per person for an 8-day voyage.
