Postcard From The Moselle

Hallo liebe leser,

As most of you know, I am currently sailing the Rhine and Moselle rivers on board Riviera River Cruises’ Geoffrey Chaucer. We are a small group of just 37 solo travelers. Needless to say, we’ve had to become quick friends. Luckily, most of us seem to enjoy each others’ company.

When I thought about what to share with you all today, I figured I would gather some first impressions about Riviera. However, I am continuing to be surprised and delighted by Riviera every day, so I figured I’d save those for the end.

What I will share with you instead is the view from the Sesselbahn in Boppard today. Instead of going on the city tour today, a brave group of women (myself included) decided to take the Sesselbahn, or chairlift, in Boppard.

I say brave because our Cruise Director, Peter, warned us of the frightening ascent: “It is very, very, very, very high. Not recommended for people with a fear of heights.”

We decided as a group that Peter really only needed to use one very opposed to four, but at least it will make us look more hardcore to our fellow passengers.

The reason I wanted to share this view with you is because it encapsulates the beauty by which we have been surrounded for our entire journey.  On the lefthand side of the photo above you can see the vineyards, which are changing color with the season. Straight on, you can see old houses and, if you look closely, a beautiful church. In the water, you will see a river boat and a cargo ship crossing paths.

The beauty of the Rhine and Moselle is absolutely unparalleled at this time of year. The weather has been perfect for sitting on deck and taking in all that we pass, be it quaint German towns, castles, or vineyards (so. many. vineyards).

Today’s trip up the chairlift provided us “brave women” with all that is magnificent about this region and time of year.

TschüssUntil next week. – Britton Frost
