Overview

Introduction

This city on the Syr Darya in the Ferghana Valley is the main city in Uzbekistan's most densely populated province. It has a long history as a Silk Road trading center, but the only thing of real interest there today are its two bazaars (one street is filled with traditional wood- and metalworkers carving and banging away). There are also the not-so-impressive remains of an ancient fortress once encircled by three moats and two walls. The area is known for its pistachio, almond and walnut groves. We don't recommend a special trip to Andijan unless you're already in the Ferghana Valley—save your time and money for more intriguing destinations. Before traveling to Andijan, or anywhere else in the Ferghana Valley, check on the current political situation. 155 mi/245 km east of Tashkent.
