Aveiro

Aveiro

Overview

Introduction

Many find the tile-faced houses and beautiful art nouveau architecture of Aveiro, Portugal, bewitching. Another lovely sight in this historic seaport 150 mi/240 km northeast of Lisbon is the fleet of colorful moliceiros (high-prowed boats) gracing the salt lagoon. Don't miss the Festa da Ria in July and August when the boats race each other, and the most beautifully painted one receives a prize.

Other sights include the church of the Convento de Jesus, lavishly decorated with gilded wooden carvings called talha dourada, and the Vista Alegre factory, known for its beautiful porcelain and glass (there is also a museum on-site).
