Located 50 mi/80 km southeast of Amsterdam, Arnhem, also previously called the Green City on the Rhine, is better known to World War II veterans as the city of A Bridge Too Far. (The film depicts an attempt by Allied paratroopers to gain a foothold across the Rhine near Arnhem.) While in town, see the Dutch Open Air Museum—a collection of buildings and costumes from throughout the Netherlands. Arnhem rates a half-day visit, but add more time if you want to see the Airborne Museum, in nearby Grote Hartensteyn, or medieval Doorwerth Castle.
Art lovers and nature lovers will want to visit De Hoge Veluwe, a 130,000-acre/53,000-hectare nature reserve with lakes, heather, deer and wild pigs. The Kroller-Muller Museum (located inside the park) has a fine collection of works by Van Gogh, as well as a few pieces from Picasso, Seurat and others. Driving into the park is not encouraged, but there are bikes available (free of charge) at the park entrance.
