Angra dos Reis

Angra dos Reis

Overview

Introduction

Angra Dos Reis, 75 mi/120 km west of Rio de Janeiro and the largest town on the Costa Verde, is a popular jumping-off point for trips to nearby islands, such as the wonderful Ilha Grande, a nature preserve with great beaches, and for yachting and spear fishing. You can reach Vila de Abrao, Ilha Grande's largest village, via a 90-minute boat trip. The Praia Lopes Mendes in the eastern part of the island is among the most beautiful bays in Brazil and is great for swimming and surfing.

While you're waiting for your boat, visit the Nossa Senhora do Carmo church and convent from 1593 and the former Sao Bernardino de Sena convent, which was built in 1653 on the San Antonio hill. From there you can enjoy a sweeping view.
