Aberystwyth is home to Aberystwyth University and a popular stopover for people traveling north or south along the shore. It is 118 mi/190 km northwest of Cardiff.
You could spend a whole day visiting its attractions, which include two pretty bays, a seashore promenade, the National Library of Wales, the Aberystwyth Arts Centre, the Ceredigion Museum (housed in a former theater) and the Cliff Railway, an electric railway that runs to the top of Constitution Hill, an excellent viewpoint.
Be sure to make the trip to Devil's Bridge, via the Vale of Rheidol Railway, a narrow-gauge line that stretches just under 12 mi/19 km.
Just north of Aberystwyth, on the pretty Dovey River, is the historic town of Machynlleth. Once the bastion of Welsh folk hero Owain Glyndwr, the village is home to the Centre for Alternative Technology, which is well worth a visit for its fascinating displays, including a low-energy house, wind-energy pumps and working organic-garden plots.
