This largely undeveloped area in far western Cyprus, 50 mi/80 km west of Nicosia, consists primarily of Akamas Peninsula National Park. It has several good hiking trails into mountains, forests and along the stunning coast. Most trails begin at the Baths of Aphrodite (unfortunately, you cannot swim in the natural pools there, they are quite small).
The ancient city of Marion is nearby, offering good beaches. Polis offers a marina, beautiful sand beaches, accommodations, restaurants and shops. Visit the green turtle conservation project at Lara at the far southern entrance to the peninsula.
Many companies operate four-wheel-drive excursions to Akamas, taking guests off the beaten path to some of the best swimming beaches. Daily public buses run between Paphos to Polis then on to Aphrodite's Baths and the park entrance, 90 minutes each way.
