Sarlat

Sarlat

Overview

Introduction

Sarlat (also known as Sarlat-la-Caneda) is a pretty medieval town 90 mi/145 km east of Bordeaux with winding streets, attractive buildings and the "Lantern of the Dead," a 12th-century tower set in a cemetery.

This little town is popular as a movie set because the houses, shops and streets seem to have changed very little since the Middle Ages. Because it's a popular destination, it can be extremely crowded in summer, and its shops are expensive. Parking is also a major problem, especially on Wednesday and Saturday (which are market days), so try to get there early.

One of the oldest theater festivals in France takes place in Sarlat from the second week in July through the first week of August. During this time, various theater troupes perform throughout the old town.
