Overview

Introduction

The name of Lencois Maranhenses National Park, a 960-sq-mi/1,550-sq-km area 2,310 mi/3,720 km northwest of Rio de Janeiro, refers to its enormous and snow-white sand dunes, which bear a striking resemblance to lencois (bed sheets). Amongst these monumental dunes, some of which rise up to 165 ft/50 m in height, are beaches, lagoons, and an interesting array of flora and fauna.

During the rainy season (March-September), the valleys among the dunes fill up with crystalline miniature lakes. The park can be visited by jeep, buggy or boat. http://www.parquelencois.com.br/english/lencois_maranhenses.php.
