Bowie

Bowie

Overview

Introduction

Bowie, Maryland is located in the central part of the state, 35 mi/22km southwest of Baltimore. Horse aficionados will appreciate a trip to Bowie to see the Belair Mansion stables.

Called the "Cradle of American Racing," the stables at Belair have produced two Triple Crown winners: Gallant Fox and Omaha, along with Nashua, a career million-dollar winner. Horses are still kept at the stables, as they have been for more than 200 years. If horses aren't your bag, the mansion itself, fully restored to its original 18th-century glory, is worth the visit.

Also worth seeing in Bowie is the Huntington Railroad Museum in Old Bowie. The railroad dates back to 1872, and many of the early-20th-century buildings remain and can be toured Saturday and Sunday noon-4 pm. Near the museum are numerous antiques stores.
