Lac La Ronge Provincial Park

Lac La Ronge Provincial Park

Overview

Introduction

Anglers flock to the northern Lac La Ronge Provincial Park, 210 mi/340 km northeast of Saskatoon. The park's 850,900 acres/344,500 hectares of forest contain 100 lakes, including Lac La Ronge. The town of La Ronge is home to the Robertson Trading Co., which sells groceries, furs and northern crafts such as birch-bark biting and beaded moccasins. It's worth the trip.

Savor local fish such as the famous northern pike or walleye (the provincial fish, sometimes also called pickerel), at the restaurant at Eagle Point Resort (http://eaglepoint.ca). The property also features one of the most challenging nine-hole golf courses in Saskatchewan, luxurious wilderness cabins and houseboat rentals. Houseboat tours of Lac La Ronge are a popular way to spend several days on the water.

Visitors can also travel by the traditional mode used by the early explorers and the First Nations people before them—canoe. Canoeists, whether going by guided tour or on their own, can be issued an official Saskatchewan Voyageur Certificate upon completion of their trip.

There are dozens of ancient aboriginal rock painting sites along the historic Churchill River. Most of these, such as Stanley Rapids Rock Paintings, are accessible only by canoe. Brave souls can bodysurf in the Otter Rapids—a life jacket is required.

Holy Trinity Anglican Church, the oldest building in Saskatchewan, is located in Lac La Ronge Provincial Park. Built in the 1860s, this large, impressive church is accessible only by boat from the town of Stanley Mission, and visitors who lack their own watercraft are advised to call ahead to arrange transport with an outfitter.

Contact the La Ronge Visitor Centre for more information (phone 306-425-3058; https://www.facebook.com/laclarongetourism). Campgrounds, cabins and a store are located within the park perimeter.
