Bulawayo

Overview

Introduction

Set in cattle and mining country, Bulawayo is the second-largest city in Zimbabwe. It is an attractive place with tree-lined streets originally designed by the colonists to be wide enough in which to turn an ox-drawn cart. Although it has more than 500,000 residents, it has a slow-paced atmosphere and doesn't feel that large, and it's an ideal stopover on the route between Great Zimbabwe and Hwange or Victoria Falls. In town are a number of museums, leafy parks and Victorian buildings, and there are some interesting wildlife attractions within a short drive. The principal game reserve is Matobo National Park, where San rock paintings, balancing rocks, the grave of Cecil Rhodes and getting close to rhino on foot make a well worthwhile day or overnight trip from the city. Bulawayo is located 230 mi/370 km southwest of Harare.
