Edenton

Edenton

Overview

Introduction

The town of Edenton, one of the oldest in the state, has many reminders of North Carolina's colonial past. Once a center of commerce and society where English lords ruled, its residents staged their own revolt as Edenton ladies circulated a petition against "that pernicious custom of drinking tea" just 10 months after the Boston Tea Party foreshadowed American independence. The 1767 Chowan County Courthouse National Historic Landmark is one of the most intact colonial courthouses remaining in America.
