Although most of Pocatello, Idaho's, attractions are just outside of town, there are also some things to see inside the city limits of the state's second-largest city. It is located 200 mi/320 km southeast of Boise.
Pocatello was an important rail junction in the 1880s and has some nice homes from that era. One of the finest Victorian homes in the entire state is the Standrod Mansion—it's like a castle. The building is privately owned. The Bannock County Historical Museum has a collection of railroad-era memorabilia. It's also the home of Idaho State University.
Among the attractions outside town is the reconstructed Fort Hall, which was used in the early 1800s as a trading post. The replica doesn't stand on the original site, however—that's in the Fort Hall Indian Reservation, north of town.
Make a side trip to the American Falls Reservoir (boating, waterskiing, fishing) and the town of Lava Hot Springs, whose odor-free, 110 F/43 C water attracts visitors from all over the world. Several resorts and spas are located there.
The Pebble Creek ski resort lies 25 mi/40 km east of Pocatello.
